Using Stampin' Blends Part 5: Freehand Coloring
One of the most colorful product suites Stampin' Up! is offering right now is the How Sweet It Is Suite. Tons of bright colors and fun images for fun occasions, especially birthdays. It also lends itself well to extra fun coloring techniques. This one is super easy and I talk about it below in my mini series on using Stampin' Blends. Be sure to read through my other blog posts from this week for great information on how to use them to get the most out of your Blends.
Product of the Week: Stampin' Blends
Stampin' Blends are one of my favorite coloring tools. I love using them because they blend together so well. It's easy to create shading and even blend from one color to another with Stampin' Blends. There are some good techniques to learn on how to use them and create amazing projects and I'll be discussing some of those techniques this week on my blog.
Freehand coloring can be daunting for some, but with Stampin' Blends, it is so much easier. Colors that are close to one another on the color wheel will blend fairly well, so you just need to start trying some things! Test and play! I created today's card by choosing a rainbow assortment of Blends that were similar in brightness. That's pretty important for switching colors entirely. Use lighter colors with lighter colors, or dark with dark. This is for switching colors, like from yellow to green.
For shading, going from light to dark is the important thing. There are actually several pairs of Blends that can be paired with another light or dark shade that is similar that will create a seamless shading. Example would be using a dark and a light purple. The purple is the same, but the lightness or darkness is different. A good duo for this example would be the Smokey Slate and Basic Black.
Another to try is color mixing, or purposely taking two colors and using them to create another color. This could look really great when making plaid patterns as where the colors overlap, a new color will emerge. It is important to remember for this to use colors you know will make other pretty colors. Primaries (red, yellow and blue) mix in pairs to create the secondary colors (orange, green, and purple). Stay away from complimentary colors, or colors that are opposite from one another on the color wheel. When complimentary colors are blended, they create brown.
Once you start playing you'll see you can create fun patterns and backgrounds. This one today is simple diagonal stripes on a 3" x 3" Whisper White Cardstock. On Wednesday's tutorial I used Flirty Flamingo Blends to color the outer edge of a Layer, and then used the Color Lifter to blend it, fading to the white cardstock. You can create borders and backgrounds with simple line patterns, or even creating more complicated patterns and blending together.
Things to remember: stick with colors that you know will blend well:
-lighter and darker shades of the same color
-colors that are close on the color wheel
-colors that you know that when mixed make another color (not just brown)
